Opelika’s Community Canopy
The Community Canopy program is designed to educate citizens of Opelika on the importance of healthy trees in our community. The City of Opelika has contracted with George Barker of Natural Resource Consultanting to provide a tree assessment and inventory. This will be done on all trees on city property, including along existing sidewalks and proposed sidewalks, city parks and right-of-ways. Citizens with concerns or questions about specific trees or areas can contact the Opelika Tree Commission within Keep Opelika Beautiful.
The Opelika Tree Commission is charged with the responsibility of overseeing the protection of trees located in the city rights-of-ways. The Commission also promotes the planting of trees, both in the right-of-way and on private properties, and tree health through various programs. Opelika’s commitment to effective urban forest management has earned it the honor of a Tree City USA for the past 31 years. Opelika earned Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
